The foundation of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Aleksandro-Nevskaya Lavra) is connected with the important events in the history of Russia. In 1240 Grand Prince and military commander Alexander Yaroslavich won a major victory in the war with Sweden on the Neva river, for which he was given the title Nevsky and canonized by the Orthodox Church as the Holy Patron of Russia.

An annual Diocesan assembly of the St. Petersburg Metropolitanate
being presided over by the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and
Ladoga Vladimir was held on October, 26,2000. Both clergy and
laity of the Diocese were among the participants of the meeting,
totally 421 delegates. The last assembly of the 20-th century
was called "historical" by the Metropolitan Vladimir. Statistic
data by the Diocese of St. Petersburg were reported by its Secretary
